143 years ago today the first official demonstration and launch of Weymouth first lifeboat, ‘Agnes Harriett’ took place opposite Royal Terrace.
Admission was by ticket and cost, front row 2/6d, standing 1/-!!!
Thousands gathered on the seafront and sands to watch this unique event.
This vessel remained on station until 1887, launching once and rescuing 7 from the Brigantine ‘Maren’ of Faroe.
It was replaced by the 'Friern Watch' at a cost of £347. |
